Relay for Life for Bill Hughes and Margie Horan. . . .

Hi Vandals,
Most of you know by now that Bill Hughes and Margie Horan are both facing bouts with terminal cancer.  I have organized a team here in Globe for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in honor of the valiant effort they are each making with their cancer.  The Relay for Life will be held here on May 16-17 at 6:00 pm starting on Friday evening at the Globe football field.  I will give details to anyone who's interested.  Margie and Kit are planning to come up to walk in the relay, and I would like to invite each of you and any other classmates you might know of who would be interested to contact me if you would like to either be on our team ("Friends") and participate.  (Participation is very flexible so please consider coming up to the relay.)  You can also make a tax deductible donation for the relay if you can't participate.  Please call me at (928)425-4747 or (928)812-4747 for more details.  If you would like to make a donation, you can make a check payable to the ACS Relay for Life and send it to me at:

                Sandi Power
                6009 E. Short Ave.
                Globe, AZ.  85501

I will let Bill and Margie both know of each and every donation that is made because this whole team is dedicated to them.  Margie (she goes by "Marj" now) is really excited about the relay, and she would love to see anyone who can attend show up for the fund raiser.  Bill is not well enough to attend, but he is glad we have a team and wants to hear how it goes.

You can get all the info you need from www.rflcoppervalleyaz.org .  I don't know if you told everyone that they can both join the team AND make donations online.  The team for Margie and Bill is called "Friends," and then the donations will be credited to our crew.

I know that so many of us have had cancer touch our lives because we or our family members lived here at the "wrong time" with the Nevada nuclear testing.  Gila County has the most cancer survivors in the state!  Do you know why that is?  It is because we have the highest incidence of CANCER in the state!  Here, but for the Grace of God, go each of us.  I know that one day it could be me also just because I lived here in the 50's and 60's.  We can't change that, but we can be proactive with helping the American Cancer Society with support for those already afflicted and with research!

I look forward to hearing from each of you who are interested in supporting our American Cancer Society Relay for Life--not just as a tribute to Bill and Margie, but as an effort to combat this terrible disease which may impact many more of us in the future.  Many of you may have had friends and family members who have already contracted cancer from the nuclear testing.  Our efforts with this relay will help so many!

Also, I have all the info people need to make a claim for the Downwinder Fund if they have cancer and lived here during those years.  I will be glad to help anyone.  Feel free to give them my address or phone number because it is amazing how many people don't know that they can get a settlement ($50,000) from the government due to the Downwinder nuclear testing issue.

I look forward to hearing from you.  Please consider coming here for the relay.  It is such a great cause, and we need everyone's support.

 Sandi (Smith) Power
